Schick Shadel Posts 36 Percent Patient Increase; S

(BURIEN, WA---March 26) Venerable Schick Shadel Hospital, founded in Seattle in 1935, posted its highest patient census since 1991 in 2003. On the verge of ceasing operations prior to a buyout by new ownership, the hospital also made a profit for the first time in many years.

Results were reported by the Duffy 1 L.P. Management Group, which purchased the facility in October 2002.*

The investor group, led by Dallas oilman James P. Graham, chairman and CEO of Schick Shadel, is comprised of former patients who were successfully treated at Schick Shadel. ìWe had benefited from Schickís 10 day program, which virtually eliminates the craving for alcohol or drugs, and we wanted to ensure the treatment continued. To us, it was a good business investment. We knew the treatment worked and wanted to fine tune operations,î Graham said.

Total patients were 618, compared with 459 in 2002. The patient census had stabilized at approximately 450 annually for many years. Losses of $294,388 in 2002 were replaced with a profit of $405,756 in 2003.

Graham credits the increase in patients and the improved financial position of the hospital to several key factors. ìWe were able to provide funding to better market the hospital, attracting new patients,î he said. ìAnd we also concentrated on better business systems, improved collections and upgrades to hospital technology. The combination has put the hospital on a sure financial footing.î

Schick Shadelís medically based treatment program uses aversion therapy over a 10-day time frame with two, two-day follow-ups. Research studies have shown that Schick has a 70 percent rate of patient success after one year, the highest rate in the addiction field.

Graham also noted that Schick Shadel has instituted several new treatment programs, including pain management treatment, Internet outpatient counseling with Egetgoing, and state DUI assessment and outpatient adjudication.

ìWeíve also seen that people are keeping New Yearís resolutions,î Graham said. ìOur census for the first two months of 2004 is posting at a 40 percent gain over last year.î

With bright prospects, Graham says there are plans to open a second hospital in Dallas in the next two years.

ìSchick Shadel worked for me,î he said, ìand I really believe that if alcoholic or drug addicted people give Schick 10 days, we can help them get their lives back.î
